As fast-paced as my days can be, each year with the Holidays approaching, my focus leans toward projects I am convinced I must get done before the first carol is sung.
An indication of this period of stress and heightening anxiety is shallow breathing as like most moms I often find myself in the middle of an ocean of obligations that hardly my two hands alone can meet.
Without fail, I get overwhelmed and begin feeling like a failure as the heaviness of the fear of not working it all in takes hold of my ankles and threatens to pull me under. My struggle to dog paddle and keep my nose just above water turns fear into the paralysis of stagnation.
The Holidays should be an enjoyable time balanced between self-care and responsibilities to work, family, and friends. When I feel myself sinking, I remember that I am in control of how much I determine to take on. Fortunately, I am learning to resist the urge to take on more than twenty-four hours can reasonably sustain.
As the weeks get shorter, try to maintain awareness of what you have already planned to take on and have a standard "no" ready for prompt delivery.
The priority of self-care applies daily and more so during the holidays.
Plan ahead and weigh that which is most important against what is not. If it is not a necessity, consider releasing it. Ask for help and consider delegating a few tasks you have taken on in the past. Determine to spend at least one hour each day focused in your breath and what you need to feel and be well.
Treat your "me time" as sacred and protect it without guilt or regret.
